Director of Engagement

Summary:

The Director of Engagement serves our mission of evangelization and discipleship by creating and implementing a strategic, multi-faceted communications operation designed to build and strengthen the branding and reputation of the parish, while also seeking to encourage and elicit greater engagement of the BGSU Community, St. Thomas More parishioners, alumni, and other stakeholders in the life of the parish. As part of the Mission Support Team, the Director of Engagement collaborates closely with the pastor and other members of the Mission Support Team to advance our parish mission to draw in and send out disciples with the heart of Jesus Christ.

 

Organization:

Repeatedly named the #2 Newman Center in the country by Best College Reviews, St. Thomas More University Parish is located directly across the street from the campus of Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in Northwest Ohio. With approximately 20,000 students at BGSU and an estimated Catholic student population of 7,000, our campus is modern mission territory! A small community of permanent parishioners means that our students experience authentic parish life with families of all ages worshipping together every Sunday. Highlights of our campus parish include Holy Mass and Confessions every day of the week, missionaries from the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS), an intentional residential community of students who live in 22 apartments on the parish campus, and a fruitful retreat program.

 

Job Details:

This is an exempt position which includes some work on evenings and weekends.  Paid a salary wage commensurate with experience, this position benefits from a flexible work
schedule. Some weekend time required to allow for regular presence at Holy Mass.

  

Responsibilities:

  • Creates an annual “Communications Plan” based on the pastoral priorities identified by the Pastor and other parish leadership. This plan should encompass effective engagement of
    current and future students, parents of students, alumni, permanent community members, and our other partners in mission. This plan must be submitted to the Pastor for approval and should be evaluated/updated on a monthly basis in collaboration with the Pastor.

  • Exercises oversight of the calendar to ensure cohesive event planning and prevent engagement fatigue.

  • Responsible for the creation and distribution of the triannual newsletter, including content, design, printing, and mailing.

  • Acts as a liaison between the parish and current and potential mission partners (donors).

  • Serves as an ambassador of the parish both at parish events and in the larger community.

  • Creates and produces printed information materials including, but not limited to brochures, posters, and signage.

  • Manages parish website. Review entire website weekly and consults regularly with entire team to ensure accurate and up-to-date content.

  • Manages parish social media accounts, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and podcast platforms. Social media management should be strategically timed, accurate, and
    aligned with parish mission and goals.
  • Collaborates with student leaders to promote Catholic Falcon events across all platforms.
  • Maintains good communication with student leaders to ensure consistent communication from the parish and Catholic Falcon Community.
  • Arranges for photography and documentation of major parish events. Maintains parish database of stock photos and graphics.
  • Remains current on all media issues, especially developments on religious or ethic issues as well as community news which pertains to our parish mission.
  • Collaborates and communicates with Pastor, Business Manager, the Director of Campus Ministry, and other members of the Mission Support Team on a regular basis.
  • Participates in training sessions offered by the Diocese of Toledo or other organizations as required by the pastor.
  • Submits an annual budget for review by the Pastor, Parish Manager, and parish finance council.
  • Attends all staff meetings, retreats, and other meetings as requested by the Pastor.
  • Collaborates with the Mission Support Team for various special events throughout the year, including but not limited to fundraisers (Trivia Night, etc.), Parish Picnic, Homecoming, Parents Weekend, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Pastor.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, digital communications or a closely related field is desired. A background in graphic art and design is important.
  • Ability to respect, promote, accommodate, and not be in conflict with the mission, moral and social teachings, doctrines and laws of the Roman Catholic Church. Familiarity with the Catholic faith is necessary to successfully fulfill the requirements of this position.
  • High level of familiarity with social media and competency in digital communication.
  • Professional writing and copy-editing skills. Must be able to present ideas in a cogent, understandable, and compelling manner.
  • Ability to adjust and respond accordingly to tight deadlines and rapidly changing situations.
  • Must be able to maintain confidential information and exercise good judgement and appropriate discretion when interacting with the public and media representatives.
  • Requires a high level of computer expertise with the Google Suite of services (GMail, Docs, Drive, Calendar etc.). Must know or be able to learn the Canva platform for design.
  • Must be able to organize and prioritize work, be proactive, take initiative within scope of responsibility, resolve complex problems, follow through, and simultaneously manage multiple priorities.
  • Must maintain a high level of attention to quality, detail, accuracy, and efficiency.
  • Must maintain excellent communication with Pastor and parish staff.
  • Must have the ability and experience to work in a respectful team environment with other parish personnel.
  • Requires above average communication skills including verbal, written, and listening.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills including tact, courtesy, and diplomacy.
  • Must successfully pass the required BCI/FBI background check prior to employment and every five years.
